September Wildflowers

Life in Christian County,
Kentucky... More About Trees and Plants...

Autumn Wildflowers
These are the wildflowers of September that I'm seeing on the roadsides right now. The yellow flower is goldenrod, and the purple flower is (I think) ironweed. Goldenrod is Kentucky's state flower. Many people claim that they are allergic to it, but they are more likely allergic to ragweed which blooms at the same time.

We have both ironweed and of course goldenrod which is Nebraska's state flower too. The ironweed were rather spindly and rather scarce around here because of the drougth. The liatris flowers were that way too. The sandburrs and texas sandburrs were thick this year as were the sunflowers.

Oh boy, I remember those "stickers" from my days of running barefoot. The Texas ones are the worst for puncturing you -- and the others are the worst for leaving a little thorn in you to get sore.
