Cost of Dennis's Hospital Stay

All In The Family...

I went by the hospital today and got Dennis's bill so I can give it to the car insurance adjuster. I thought my readers might be interested to know the final tally (brace yourself): $51,972.00.

That figure includes 6 days in the hospital (several days in intensive care), anesthesiology, emergency room, surgery (about 1/3 of the total bill), recovery room, respiratory therapy (cheapest thing on the bill), CAT scans and MRI, X-ray, lab, and pharmacy. I don't know yet if there will be individual bills from the doctors as well.

I still feel confident that the health insurance and the car insurance will cover the vast majority of this figure between the two of them. If I weren't fairly sure about that, I'd be worried.

Dennis goes to the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow to get the stitches out of his arm. It will be a big day for him, getting bathed and clothed, then to town to the doctor and home again.

Thank goodness for insurance! This is the type of incident that demonstrates how much people need insurance, whether it is just for catastrophic accidents like these, or for everyday, run of the mill problems. Can you imagine if a 25 year old with no insurance had been on that bike? How could that person pay the bill?

I'm still mad at the person who hit Dennis!

People ask me all the time if the hit and run driver has been caught yet, but it's a silly question. Of course he hasn't been and he won't be unless he confesses. There were no witnesses, and there were no clues at the scene of the accident.

But on the bright side, at least we shouldn't have to pay too much of the hospital bill, and the big thing to be thankful for is that Dennis wasn't killed or permanently disabled.

I am glad Dennis is coming through this as well as he is. I wish he had not been injured, of course, but also am thankful he wasn't killed or permanently disabled.

This is one of the big fears of my life -- as a freelancer, I have no insurance coverage for myself (health, dental, vision or life). Such an event would be catastrophic for me. Truth is I don't make enough money to afford any coverage, plus I was turned down for an individual policy after my COBRA benefits ran out.

You probably have some injury protection on your automobile insurance, Trixie, that will help you out if you are in a vehicle accident. And if it's the other guy's fault, you'll be covered through his insurance.

Genevieve, I missed your earlier post about the accident, but I'm glad to see that the injuries weren't catastrophic.

In my small town some years back, a woman on a bicycle was killed by a hit-and-run vehicle, kids joyriding. No one was ever charged, much less convicted.

Thanks for stopping by, Michael. What you describe could very well have happened with Dennis, had he been hit differently.

It is hard to imagine how someone could just drive on and leave a person after hitting them.

On this small road, it was probably a resident of the general area, not a traveler passing through. I hate to think that we have someone that cold-hearted living around here.

Today Isaac and I were wondering if the driver listened to the news and read the newspaper for a few days to see if he'd killed Dennis or not.

I'm glad to hear that Dennis is recovering. Like Sarabeth, I'm mad at the idiot who struck him and didn't even stop.

I have tried several times to post comments on your blog, but each Blogger has has a problem. It may be the beta version you're using. Let's see if it works this time.

According to a recent post on Blogger Buzz,, the posting problem has been resolved now. I hope so!
