Cat Meets Cicadas

Cicadas have emerged in Christian County, Kentucky

Casper observes mating cicadasCasper observes a pair of vibrating, buzzing, mating cicadas

The loud noise of cicadas is constant right now. I don't know if they ever quiet down. I stay up pretty late at night, but they're still singing when I go to bed.

I've read that cats and dogs sometimes eat so many cicadas that they get sick. Casper doesn't seem to think they are food. He's really not sure what should be done with them. He watches them suspiciously and touches them gingerly. I wonder if maybe he associates buzzing with bumblebees.

Great photo, Genevieve! I'm not sure what should be done with them either. : )

Our cat had a face-off with a raccoon last night. He was on one side of the kitchen door, and the 'coon was on the other side. They watched each other warily from opposite sides of the glass. It was quite funny to watch. Eventually the raccoon backed off and returned to his fruitless attempt to get birdseed from our raccoon-proof bird feeders.

Michael, with the oppressive heat, the extreme drought, and the constant, intense cicada noise, Kentucky feels like the setting of a dramatic book or movie. Something has to happen to break all the tension.

Runaway, I was surprised one night when I looked out the window and saw a big possum eating out of the catfood dish. The cats were just lying on the porch watching him. I guess they knew him

I had a cat once that would eat cicadas. She would walk into the house with one in her mouth, still buzzing. Without fail I would later find cicada remains on the carpet -- I don't think they agreed with her at all :-)

Cyndi, my daughter was telling me today that she got a little freaked out when a cicada lit on her. They definitely are a big bug.

Eva, don't you just love when your cat wants to come in the house with the catch of the day? I might let one of our cats come in with a cicada, but I've also had them show up at the door with a mouse!
